What is soffit and why is it important?

When it comes to MA roofing, our team has seen it all. From a variety of materials to the heftiest of roof repairs, our industry experience allows our team to assess and recommend potential improvement. Often, one of these improvements comes with the installation or repurposing of the soffit. While not every building is designed with soffit, it is an integral part of the original design.

The definition

The soffit is the underlying material attached to the exposed overhang of your roof. While this feature is optional, the soffit bridges the gap between the house siding and the outer edge of the roof.

Its purpose

While the incorporation of a soffit to the roof is aesthetically pleasing, it is also a functioning piece of the roof design. With the ability to create a ventilated design, the soffit helps to protect your home or building from moisture and other elements of weather. As we know, when moisture enters, structural damage and mold growth are often the result. Furthermore, the soffit creates a barrier to keep small animals from entering.

It’s versatile

Of course, the function of the soffit is one of the most significant benefits. However, aesthetics matter too! Available in a wide range of styles and colors, soffits can easily add character that works with the overall look and feel of your home.

Beyond the enhanced look that a soffit provides to your home or building, versatility extends to material selection as well. While most soffits are made from vinyl, which is effective at withstanding degradation caused by excessive heat and moisture, there are other options: wood, steel, aluminum, and fiber cement.

The design

Soffit contains a series of vents or holes which serve as the air intake for attic ventilation. These holes move air up and through the attic, out the ridge vent on top of the roof. This flow helps to keep the surface of the roof cool. With adequate ventilation, the soffit also helps in keeping out moisture, which can develop rot in the sheathing and rafters.

Maintenance

The soffit can be damaged by water saturation due to clogged gutters or a weak gutter system. When exposed to moisture, wooden soffits become vulnerable to rotting. Animals such as raccoons and squirrels can cause damage to soffits if they use the area for nesting.

You can check for soffit damage by looking for signs of water saturation. You will typically see a yellow stain if water has penetrated the roof. Splintered or rotten wood or gaps where animals have chewed through are signs of physical damage.
